Some folks just have a knack for making you feel good. On Thursday, Oct. 29, Sedona Studio Live presents David Milgram and his own brand of song, in which he sings of hope, healing, pain, peace, despair and delight. Harnessing a variety of styles, from World, Folk and Rock music, he began playing guitar and writing lyrics at age 13.
Inspired by old time greats like Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and Big Bill Broonzy, along with the likes of Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell, David's vocal style and harmonic spice, piercing yet casual lyrics and guitar arrangements all invite the listener to experience the music of his mind, body and soul.
On his release, "Live From The Heart," David's harmonica and acoustic guitar are complemented by the extraordinary electric guitar work of Stanley Jordan, who has said that Milgram's music and singing is "very ego-less and Mozart-like." David Milgram's messages of Love and Peace span across the generations in his robust yet tender songwriting. The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
Studio Live, home of the Sedona Performers Guild (SPG), is a fantastically unique part of our community. The SPG is devoted to offering support to performers and guests, both local and otherwise, in order to provide a space specifically for the expression of their craft.
Along with offering world-class music and performances, Studio Live also offers workshops designed to educate members of the community in areas of performance that interest them. A very important part of the SPG's mission is educating and reaching out to the community through performance.
Many classes have been offered to date, including A Cappella, Belly Dance, Step and Tap Dance, Film Acting, Spoken Word and more. Many are scheduled through the New Year including a Performance Class with Nathan Trujillo of Radio Dogma and a new A Cappella series with Susannah Martin in February.
The group hopes to begin offering youth classes and providing scholarships to deserving individuals unable to afford them. Recently having received 501(c)3 Non-Profit Status, the SPG will be able to head towards these goals more quickly through grants and donations.
An upcoming workshop to note is the Performance Poetry Workshop: "Spit Words!" presented by the outlandish and accomplished mikel weisser. The widely published and learned poet/author/publisher/performer/administrator/survivor weisser invites you to join him for an hour of metaphor, mayhem and magic, and to share the opportunity to deepen your perceptions and sharpen your readings both as a performer and a poet.
Following the workshop, a public reading will be held at the Java Love Café (2155 89A, 204-1500) in order that the newly honed performing poets might test their freshly crafted abilities on the public during a special Halloween Day Poetry Open Mic. The cost of this class is $10, with a discount offered to students. Workshop is at 2 p.m. Halloween Day, Saturday Oct. 31.
