JEROME - The Saturday after Thanksgiving will be the annual Light Up the Mountain in Jerome. The Jerome Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Jerome and the Jerome Historical Society sponsor this annual event.

The event will start and end earlier this year than in past years. It will run from 3 to 7 p.m.

"It gets colder at night," said Coleen Hall, event organizer. "Some visitors from Phoenix with children need to leave early."

The Mingus Union High School Jazz Band will start things off at 3:30 p.m. with an open-air performance in the shell of the Bartlett Hotel.

At about the same time, Santa will arrive in town perched on the town's 1928 antique fire truck.

"He'll ride around town so everybody knows he has arrived," Hall said. "Then he will go to the Old Town Hall next door to the police department."

Children can sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they'd like for Christmas. Pictures with Santa will be available, and a very special picture frame made especially for the event will be available for purchase.

During all of the activities, the Mingus Union High School Choir and Theater Group will be strolling around singing Christmas Carols and performing vignettes.

At 5 p.m. will be the traditional lighting of 500 luminarias lining the business section.

Have the children back in the Bartlett Hotel at 5:30 for the reading of "The Night Before Christmas," read again this year by Tom Pitts.

At 6:30 is the main event of the evening. Santa will head to the Upper Park to meet with the choir for the official lighting of the tree, and much of the park and business district.

Everything is over by 7 p.m. But Coleen Hall says many of the shops and restaurants will be open.

For information call the Jerome Chamber of Commerce at (928) 634-2900.
