View of the house fire on May 25 in the Village of Oak Creek. Two homes were destroyed and many of the fire departments in the Verde Valley were deployed to help stop the firest from spreading to the forest or other homes with winds in excess of 60 mph reported. Those who lost homes that day were Sammy & Jayne Davis and Adam & Kelley Grebenstein.
On Tuesday, June 19, the residents of the greater Sedona area will come together in a collective gesture of community solidarity to contribute to the fundraising efforts for the three families who lost their homes and possessions to house fires in May. The event will take place on the parking lot at the Outlet Mall in the Village of Oak Creek and inside Canyon Moon Theatre, also in the outlet mall. The event is being touted as, "Sedona Cares - Fires Fundraiser Day of Action." All of the proceeds and donations for the day will be split equally between the three families who lost their homes.
Additional fund-raising events are taking place in Sedona and VOC on June 16 and 17 as well as a special fundraising golf outing on the 29th.
Complete information on all the fundraising activities can be viewed at www.SedonaFiresFundraiser.com. In addition, a "Give Forward" donation link can be found on the fundraiser website for individuals who wish to donate funds online. Folks can also visit the Give Forward site set up for all three families by visiting http://www.giveforward.com/sedonafirefundraiser. It's an easy way to help out with donations that can be made from $5 or more.
The "Day of Action" event on the 19th is highlighted by an impromptu festival set up outside at the Outlet Mall in VOC with booths, kids activities, food offerings, entertainment and more. The booths are being organized by dozens of local companies, individuals and organizations. All in all, over 100 volunteers have come together to create and man the booths. The outdoor activities start at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 6 p.m.
Some of the organizations participating are Arizona Jolly Jumps' Junior Obstacle Course and Surf 'n' Slide, Sedona Fire District's "Wheel of Safety" game, Sedona Detachment of Marines' balloon pop dart game, Sedona Business Network's football toss game, Red Rock High School Thespians' stacked cans game, Kelly Branard's bean bag toss, face painting by local artists, chair massage by local therapists, Desert Star School's kids game, and other booths created and managed by local clubs and organizations.
Close adult supervision will be provided for the obstacle course and surf 'n' slide. Camp Soaring Eagle is lending the event a variety of kid games with prizes for participants. A dunk tank where one will have a chance to drench local dignitaries and officials is also being set up.
Food supplied by local restaurants and Weber's IGA will be cooked and sold at the event, starting at 11 a.m. One large booth will host a Silent Auction of new items donated by individuals and businesses and another booth will sell Raffle tickets to take a chance to win dozens of new donated items.
An entertainment and announcement stage with bands and performers throughout the day will highlight the outdoor event. Performances will start at noon and continue until 6 p.m. Included in the outdoor entertainment is the Big Park Community School Steel Drum Garbage Can Band, Zumba and other fun dance instruction, stilt walkers, unicyclist and other street performers.
A fire department truck with dedicated firemen providing fire safety tips and suggestions will be on hand. Some were on the line fighting the VOC house fires in 60+ mph winds and kept the two house fires from becoming a monumental home and forest fire.
A big bake sale is being set up from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. inside the lobby of Canyon Moon Theatre. A host of creative bakers have volunteered to donate their best creations to entice the public to come early and purchase delicious baked items. Full cakes and pies will also be for sale.
During the daytime Fundraiser Fair, inside Canyon Moon Theatre there will be three separate variety "shows" featuring three different lineups of many of Sedona's most popular entertainers who are all volunteering their time and talents. Local entertainers and event organizer, Tom & Shondra have contacted dozens of performers in the area and all have agreed to be part of this extravaganza of music, dance, comedy and song. The shows include performances by Alex Ogburn, Dana De Luz & Michael Beckley, Jeanie Carroll, Rosemary & Frankie Chavez, Susannah Martin, Shaeri Richards, Eric Williams, Zenprov Improv Group and many more.
The shows at 2 and 4 p.m. have a minimum donation of $15 per ticket and the show at 7:30 p.m. will cost $35 each. Approximately 100 tickets per show are available and can be purchased at Bashas' in west Sedona, Marketplace Café and Canyon Moon Theatre at the Oak Creek Outlet Mall and Rycus Corners in VOC. Complete breakdown of the performance schedule with all the entertainment in each show can be viewed on the fundraiser website: www.SedonaFiresFundraiser.com.
