Do you love gourd art? Learn how to create your own this Saturday, May 26, at an all-day workshop led by gourd artist Dawn Moffett.
You'll start with a raw, presoaked gourd, and working through every step in the process, complete your first decorated bowl or birdhouse in one day.
The gourds are presoaked to make the first steps -- cleaning, scraping and cutting -- easier. While your gourd dries, Moffett will show you how to work with the ink dyes and other types of decoration.
You'll have plenty of time to practice these on scrap pieces of gourd before actually working on your project.
Can't draw a straight line? Not to worry ... the class is geared to all levels of ability; the only "must" is a sense of discovery and a willingness to play.
You'll also need a few old brushes (different sizes if you have them), some sturdy but comfortable-to-you hand tools that can scrape and score the gourds, scrubbies, small plastic containers, and maybe some acrylic paints, beads, shells, or other bits... it's your gourd; bring whatever inspires you!
Dawn Moffett has lived in the Verde Valley for most of her life; her gourd art, pine needle weaving, and copper jewelry reflect her love for the Southwest, Nature, and ethnic crafts.
Gathering and preparing the materials are, for her, a meditative part of the process of creating and teaching art.
She shows her work at "Made in Clarkdale" and currently has some pieces in the Manheim Gallery in Cottonwood.
The fee for this workshop, sponsored by El Valle Artists Association, is $45 plus $10 for a presoaked medium-sized gourd (you can bring your own), payable the day of the workshop.
The class meets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Heritage School, 2030 Cherry Street, in Cottonwood.
Pre-registration is required; 634-5807 or Dmoffett.email@example.com.
