4/30/2012 8:09:00 AM Indian classical dance at Avatar Festival
There are 10 major Avatars (incarnations) of the Supreme, recorded in India's ancient Sanskrit litterateurs, that have appeared on the earth. One of them was Nrisimhadev, who came to protect his devotee Prahlada and vanquish the tyrant Hiranyakasipu, a despot who was said to posses superhuman powers. Especially in South India, there are many monumental temples that have been erected in honor of the Nrisimha Avatar, which are thousands of years old.
The Sedona Center of Vedic Culture will have a celebration and Avatar festival this Friday May 4th at 6:30 p.m., which will include a classical Indian dance performance by Thulasi Shamsundar, a Bharat Natyam dance teacher from the Arathi school of Phoenix. Kirtan, Puja, and a sumptuous vegetarian dinner will be served. Admission is $15 and by reservation only, and can be made by calling (928) 204-4455.
