Come dressed as a character from the film and you could win prizes at the Earth Day event at the Sedona Performing Arts Center.

Since 1970, people have been calling April Earth Month, and this month, there are a lot of wonderful events going on all over Arizona and the country. They celebrate our connections to this planet that gives us life and sustains everything we do. In Sedona, on Earth Day April 22 starting at 4 p.m., there will be a celebration and fund-raiser at the Sedona Performing Arts Center. Everyone in the Verde Valley is invited to share in the fun, food, film and prizes while giving a little bit to help our local schools. Tickets are now on sale at the Sedona Film Festival office and on their website: www.SedonaFilmFestival.com.

"Earth Day is a great opportunity to bring our community together," said John Neville, president of Sustainable Arizona. "Too often, we spend time fighting each other over trivial things, when we need to come together to deal with the larger issues facing our community in the Verde Valley. This event will be a lot of fun for just about everyone, and proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to local schools for their environmental education programs and field trips."

The event is part of the Conscious Communities project led by Sustainable Arizona and funded in part by a grant from the Sedona Community Foundation. The objective is to help people understand how to make their community more self-reliant and better able to weather the economic and environmental storms of these challenging times.

As Neville put it, communities in Arizona should not suffer because some people in Greece mismanaged their economy. As the prices for fuel keep climbing, people should not get hit hard by prices at the grocery store. But that is what is occurring today. Working together to become more self-sustaining is the answer. "We've done this before during the Great Depression and World War II, we can do it again," assured Neville.

Doors to the Earth Day event will open at 4 p.m., and participants will be treated to displays from local nonprofits and green businesses. Wonderful foods will be provided by Heartline Café.

At 5 p.m., perhaps the most fun and exciting "green" movie ever produced will be shown. People who come to the Earth Day festivities dressed as movie characters have chances to win prizes donated by local businesses, such as gift certificates to movies and restaurants, subscriptions to Green Living Magazine, and other fun gifts.

In addition, there's a Great Green Raffle underway with wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets are on sale at Bashas in West Sedona and at SolarWorks in Cottonwood. Also, look for information tables in front of New Frontiers and other stores in your community.

Sponsors for this event who donated prizes or funding include: SolarWorks (an installed hot water solar system); L'Auberge de Sedona Resort (brunch for 4); Sedona Adventure Tours (kayaking trip on the Verde River); the Grand Canyon Railway (a ride for 2); Hilton Sedona Resort (dinner for 2); El Rincon (gift certificates); WearEarth (fashion bags and natural skin creams); NRG Build Pros (home energy audits); Sustainable Sedona; Sedona Private Guides.

Visit www.SedonaFilmFestival.com to get your tickets and stop by Bashas or SolarWorks to take a chance to win great green prizes in the raffle. It all goes to benefit our children and our community.

Sustainable Arizona is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life in Arizona through the pursuit of sustainable development and education - www.SustainableArizona.org.
