Jesse Johnson works with Sterling Silver and turquoise and his jewelry is traditional and contemporary Zuni Cluster Petit Point jewelry
April 7-8 will be the date of the annual Easter Art and Craft Show at Bell Rock Plaza. Among the 40 or more artists will be several newcomers and several who have only been to the show a time or two.
The featured artist has been to Bell Rock Plaza only a couple of times and has sold out each time. His work is very time consuming and painstaking, so he is creating new pieces the rest of the tme. His name is Jesse Johnson and he is a member of the Zuni Tribe and lives in the Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico. He belongs to the Eagle clan and the child of the Crow clan. He is also a decorated U.S. Marine Veteran who served in 2 oversea deployments. He works with Sterling Silver and turquoise and his jewelry is traditional and contemporary Zuni Cluster Petit Point jewelry. He makes earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, squash blossoms and bolo ties.
He works at home as a parent and silversmith, as did his parents before him, and he learned these skills as he was growing up and observing. He uses Sleeping Beauty turquoise and natural Red Sea Coral and works with prayers daily to help guide him in the design and the work.He hand shapes Sterling wire into drop shapes and lays out the pattern on a silver plate, which he then solders. When that is done, he cuts out the design with a saw.He then hand serrates fine bezel to hold the stones and solders this to the wire design. He cuts each stone with a wet trim saw, the stones being glued to a dowell. Each stone is cut and polished to a dome shape and set into each bezel. His designs take weeks sometimes, but he loves seeing the finished designs, and he feels it is a blessing to be able to introduce his jewelry to Sedona and to be a part of the show.
There will be 40 artists at the show, and the array will be paintings, rugs, metal art, pottery, glass, photography, wood, soaps and spa products, butterflies, knives, windchimes, and more.
The show is Sat. and Easter Sunday, April 7-8 from 10 to 5 each day. Bell Rock Plaza is located on Hwy 179 in the Village of Oakcreek, Sedona right next door to the La Quinta Inn. For more information please call (928) 284-9627 or visit www.bellrockartshows.com.
