“Canyon” by Gregory Deane is 48”h x 48”w mixed media on canvas painting to be unveiled with new works as “Allusion: Master Works by Gregory Deane” opens at Sedona’s Lanning Gallery “1st Friday,” Oct. 4, 5-8 p.m.

Visitors to Sedona's ever growing Gallery District are frequently surprised by the distinguished caliber of artwork available and October offers rare opportunities to art lovers as the autumn art season kicks into high gear.

At Lanning Gallery, which has anchored the Sedona art scene for 27 years, the new exhibition, "Allusion: Master Works by Gregory Deane," opens during its 1st Friday Gallery Tour reception on Friday, Oct. 4, 5-8 p.m.

Visitors to Lanning Gallery will have the opportunity to meet the internationally acclaimed abstract artist and Deane will speak briefly at 6 p.m. with time allotted for a Q&A afterward. This is a rare opportunity to learn and be enlightened about the techniques and inspiration of Deane, the first American artist to have a solo exhibition at Florence, Italy's famed Accademia delle Arti del Disegno founded in 1563. Deane also has a painting in the permanent collection of Florence's Uffizi Gallery and enjoys a long list of prominent collectors.

The imagery and techniques exhibited in Deane's paintings continue to evolve with ever more striking features. He generously fills his canvases with vivid colors, broad strokes and hidden subtleties, surprising textures and mysterious forms. This is work one can visually explore for years and continue to find new detail and expanded interpretation.

For Deane, this body of work also represents the point in his life that he has reached after forty-plus years as a working artist. "I feel I have gained enough maturity as an artist to expand my perspective," he notes. It is a time which enables him more experimentation with the particulars of the medium itself and allows his images to bear an increased freedom.

"The exploring of new possibilities is exhilarating," Deane adds, "much like an internal rebirth. The ability to let go of old expectation and judgments has resulted in my current work being more dynamic, stronger, and more passionate."

Stop by the opening for "Allusion: Master Works by Gregory Deane," enjoy refreshments and meet this engaging, top-caliber artist. Exhibition through Oct. 13.
