Two Flutes, acrylics, 30 x 24, by Karlene Koch Voepel
Rimrock artist Karlene Voepel is one of 10 winners in the "Over 60" international competition sponsored by The Artist's Magazine.
Artists over 60 years old were invited to enter their paintings in this annual event. Karlene's acrylic painting, "Two Flutes," can be seen in the March issue of The Artist's Magazine, which is now at the newstands.
Karlene's grandaughter, Alexis, was the inspiration. While visiting from Missouri, her mother bought her a little flute in Jerome, a quiet flute. Karlene photographed her in the bright Arizona sunlight and decided to paint her, times two, in this unusual double portrait.
The charismatic painting also won first place in the national Interactive Painting Challenge sponsored by Jerry's Artarama and was in SAGA and Sedona Arts Center shows.
This past year Karlene spent a lot of time at the Sedona Cancer Center undergoing chemo and radiation treatments for breast cancer, so this award was a particularly bright spot in an otherwise difficult year.
