The Village Gallery of Local Artists recently welcomed new member and polymer clay jeweler, Judith Skinner whose 'calla lily' necklaces and pendants are favorites throughout Arizona and beyond. The former computer software engineer discovered the world of polymer clay in 1995; combining technology and polymer clay artistry, she subsequently became known internationally for her innovative discovery of a color gradation technique known as the Skinner Blend.

"Polymer clay," she explains, "is an extremely versatile art medium; it is malleable at room temperature, allowing the artist to sculpt, carve, drape, stamp, mold or hand form jewelry pieces." The result for this artist is a distinctive collection of neck pieces resembling 'calla lilies' which when subjected to the Skinner Blend and hardened with heat, are fused into a palette of blended colors from soft subtle pastels to vibrant metallic tones. Her newest colors are a vibrant flamingo-pink and 'denim.' She also creates special 'jewels' using the ancient Italian technique of 'mille fiore' -crosscut clay forms that when fused, do indeed resemble a 'thousand' flower petals.

"My work has a sense of whimsy and frivolity with just a hint of order and geometry. When I discovered polymer clay, I reversed my priorities and now use my problem solving skills to enhance my artistry."

As the Village Gallery of Local Artists celebrates its first full year as an artist-owned cooperative LLC, the members are grateful to the local residents who have continued to visit the unique little gallery on 'main street' in the Village of Oak Creek over the past four years. Locals and tourists can still count on finding over 40 high-quality displays of last minute gifts or fine art décor for home and business while chatting with the on-duty artists 363 days of the year.

Every member artist serves on one of the co-op committees which are always busy behind the scenes -jurying new artists to ensure only the best quality of work, monitoring displays, managing finances, maintaining the one-of-a-kind building, planning special events and more.

Meet Judith and other artists, including July featured artist, palette-knife painter, Patti Stepp, on First Friday at the Village Gallery open house from 5-8 pm and for demonstrations each Second Saturday from 1-3 pm.

The gallery is currently accepting new artists.

The Village Gallery of Local Artists is OPEN DAILY 10am-6pm
