Shakespeare’s story of the star-crossed young lovers is known to all: Two young people, Romeo and Juliet, from feuding noble families of Verona, meet, fall in love, and, after secretly marrying, tragically die within moments of each other.

The Sedona International Film Festival presents Ballet in Cinema on Monday, Aug. 27 when it hosts the big screen premiere of "Romeo and Juliet" from The Royal Ballet in London.

There will be one show at 4 p.m. at the festival's Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

"Let the grace and elegance of ballet whisk you away!" said festival events coordinator and board member Beverly Hurff. "To see this presented in HD is as if you were right there in the theatre at the performance ... with the best seats in the house!"

Shakespeare's timeless story, when matched with Sergey Prokofiev's brilliant score and Kenneth MacMillan's signature choreography for The Royal Ballet, has become a 20th-century ballet classic.

Shakespeare's story of the star-crossed young lovers is known to all: Two young people, Romeo and Juliet, from feuding noble families of Verona, meet, fall in love, and, after secretly marrying, tragically die within moments of each other.

Prokofiev's score for "Romeo and Juliet" was completed in 1936 and performed with choreography by fellow Russian Ivo Vana-Psota. The passionate and heart-rending score inspired many subsequent choreographers.

Kenneth MacMillan was asked to choreograph it for The Royal Ballet in 1962. He produced one of his most famous and acclaimed works, now widely considered the definitive version of the ballet. MacMillan's use of naturalistic acting and gesture - the explicit expression of adolescent passion between the two young lovers - was an innovation at the time.

Lauren Cuthbertson and Federico Bonelli star as the star-crossed lovers.

Conductor and musician Russell Fox will briefly discuss ballet music and the work of Sergey Prokofiev prior to the start of the show. Well known to Sedona's classical audience, Fox is one of the presenters of the pre-opera talks. We are pleased to welcome him to the ballet performances as well.

"Romeo and Juliet" will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on one day only: Monday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m.

Tickets are $15, or $12.50 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A, in West Sedona. For more information, visit: www.SedonaFilmFestival.com.
