The J. Powers Band is a five-piece band, with a mixed-bag of R&B, Blues, Soul, Motown, Reggae, Pop & Classic Rock.

They will be performing Friday, March 7, at 8:30 p.m., at Sound Bites Grill in uptown Sedona.

The drive behind this versatile group comes from band leader Joann Powers, the female front-lead vocalist. With great 3-part harmony arrangements, four of the five band members sing lead, entertaining melodies, and offer a professional and high energy group.

Their outstanding repertoire includes the best classics and new hit favorites.

Powers, formerly from Detroit, is influenced by the Motown sound and sweet soul music. Starting her singing career at a very early age, she knew she wanted to be an entertainer.

She was the lead vocalist for several well-known bands including Kamage, Take Five, and Starlight, in the Detroit area and surrounding suburbs. She moved to Arizona in 1985, worked with a couple of local bands then decided to take a short hiatus from the music scene - in 2001 Powers started her own band (The J Powers Band) and has been working ever since with some of the best musicians in town.

Working closely to keep the music sweet is Rick Henry, formerly from Chicago  - a seasoned guitarist, catch his tasteful solos and mellow blues renditions.

Michael Black, formerly from Chicago - the funk-master, thumping and jumping bass man - in addition to his bass he adds lead and harmony vocals.

Mike Mattingly - formerly from Germany - a super drummer that keeps the groove and solid beat, plus adds leads and harmony vocals.

Mike also owns a rehearsal business/studio right in Phoenix - called Perfect Timing Entertainment.

Recently added to the group Paul Darrow, from Chicago- sitting in for Tom Powers on Keyboards - Paul Darrow brings his talents and adds additional flair, background and lead vocals to the bands repertoire.

The J Powers Band often performs gigs at Cliff Castle Casino- Camp Verde, the Hardrock Cafe-in Phoenix, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, Pappadeux's Seafood Kitchen, Dillon's, Roadrunner, Tropicana Express-Laughlin, Fort McDowell Casino, Avi Casino-Laughlin, Viejas Casino - Sand Diego CA, Pala Casino-Pala Calif, Tap Haus - Cave Creek, Augies- Surprise, Zendejas, El Pedregal, the Rhythm Room, Portofino/Dirty Pelican and many other venues.

The band is always keeping an eye open for other popular clubs and festivals in Arizona and out of state.

This will be their first performance at Sound Bites Grill. The band will start at 8:30pm on Friday, March 7, with a $10 cover.
