"Rumi's Wedding" is the anniversary of Rumi's transition from the earth. People from all traditions came to his wedding as they recognized in Rumi the presence of universal being.
Each December, annual global celebrations honor the life, wisdom and love of Jelaluddin Rumi. Sedona's celebration includes performance of Rumi's ecstatic poetry and music followed by Sufi whirling meditation.
Honored as a peacemaker and virtuoso, Omar Faruk Tekbilek is now one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. He was born in Adana, Turkey, to a musical family who nurtured his precocious talents.
He explored Arabesque, Turkish and Western styles. He met the Sufi Mevlevi dervishes in Istanbul and was inspired by the head Neysen (ney player), Gunduz Kutbay, and their mystical approach to music and movement and the fusion of sound and spirit.
In 1988, Omar Faruk met Brian Keane. In the following years, they produced six recordings together, launching Omar Faruk into the world music scene.
Omar has established himself as one of the foremost exponents of Middle Eastern music. A multi-instrumentalist par excellence, he has collaborated with many leading musicians including Ginger Baker, Youssou N'Dour, Ofra Haza, Yasmin Levy, Simon Shaheen, Glen Velez, Jai Uttal and Steve Shehan.
He has contributed to many film and TV scores and recordings of world sacred music and continues to tour internationally. Omar Faruk is the recipient of the "Best Artist of the Turkish Music Award 2003 "from the "Turkish Writers Association".
Gabrielle Young is a performance and recording artist who has experienced directly the power and presence of Rumi's initiatory transmission.
Poet, scholar, author and mystic, Andrew Harvey comments: "Gabrielle Young has honed her being and her art. She is not merely a marvelous translator of Rumi's poetry, but a transmitter of their sacred fire."
Two other gifted musicians, Anthony Mazzella (concert guitar virtuoso) and Three Trees (percussive, halo drum), are also in the evening's ensemble.
