From trombone to guitar, Old Time to New Grass...Hank Levine has experienced a life filled with music. In his early years, Hank was exposed to various styles of music. Whether at home or at school he was greatly encouraged by his instructors and family to expand his musical horizons. Growing up in California included 18 years of brass instruments prior to discovering his love for the guitar while attending Pierce College in Los Angeles. Levine performed with several bands on the West coast, depending on the night they might be know as "Empty Pockets" or "Pockets of Gold."
Having been influenced throughout his career by the lyrical styles of Walkin' Jim Stoltz, the skip-beat guitar of Russ Barenberg, and the performance skills of John Hyatt; Levine enjoys doing things "Hank Style" and doing it better then anyone else. One of his fondest memories is of Bill Dick (fiddle / 12 string guitar player) encouraging him to experiment with tuning sound and to remember to always have fun while playing.
Since moving to Arizona Hank has significantly cut back his performing schedule in an effort to add balance to his life. By focusing more time and energy on his songwriting, Levine has been able to put together a collection of original music large enough for 8 to 10 albums. Hank will often collaborate with his wife, Joan, using her poems for lyrical inspiration as well as her artwork for his cover art.
Levine is currently editing his newest album, "Left of Center," to be released Aug. 22. He has two previous release, solo album: "Bear Truth" and "Night Dreams," a collaboration with Jason Teague on bass.
