Canyon Singers and instrumentalists present free Palm Sunday concert
The Canyon Singers
The Canyon Singers

Gabriel Faure's Requiem is dear to the hearts of many choral singers and audiences. The music is peaceful, hopeful, and harmonically intriguing. Canyon Singers founder/Director Sandra Reid has put together an enlarged group of singers and instrumentalists for this Palm Sunday concert. The venue is St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Arroyo Pinyon Drive in West Sedona. Concert time is Sunday, April 1, at 3 p.m. sharp, and is a free gift to the community.

Several members from local choirs are rehearsing with Canyon Singers for this special concert. In addition, Scott Wedgbury, organist, from All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, CA, will accompany the group. Lyra, the Chandler-based duo who often perform with the Phoenix Symphony, will play violin (Alan Ames) and timpani (Maryanne Kremer-Ames.) And the ethereal tones of the harp will be played by Corelia Tom of Flagstaff. Solo parts will be sung by Canyon Singers' members Beth Sanford, soprano, and John Cummings, baritone.

The group has been mastering the unexpected and beautiful turns of harmony and dynamics for months. Gabriel Foure said of his own composition, it is "as gentle as I am myself," in its expressions of tenderness, pardon, and hope.

Sandra Reid also suggests that people mark their calendars for Canyon Singers' 21st annual spring concert, with the theme of "Songs of Earth and Sky." That concert will be performed on April 22nd at St. Andrew's, three weeks after Faure's Requiem. Details will be announced soon. For now, start this meaningful observance of Holy Week with Canyon Singers at the April 1 concert.

For information about either concert, call Sandra Reid at 282-5928.
