Big Band tribute to honor Sedona's Greg Aitken
Greg Aitken
Greg Aitken

Chris Counelis, band leader for Swing Shift, named his band after Greg Aitken, a former Sedona musician (known for his saxophone playing and music teaching) who passed away last December.

Greg was a major influence in Chris' career.  Chris formed a new band using Greg's performing band name "Swing Shift" with the music influence of the Big Band era.

The list of big bands and big bandleaders spans over 70 years of recorded jazz history, roughly from 1935 to the present day. During the Big Band era there were many territorial bands and sweet bands that played a more commercial brand of dance music.

Chris is bringing Big Band Music to Sedona on July 4 at the new Sound Bites Grill for a fun evening from the Jazz and Swing Era consisting of rhythm, brass, and woodwind in his seven-piece band.

Greg's memories carry on with the band and Chris and Sound Bites Grill will be celebrating him on July 4th with music from the finest jazz musicians in the business including Benny Goodman (the King of Swing), Dizzy Gillespie, Cozy Cole, Milt Hinton, Jonah Jones and Illinois Jacquet will be performed.

Band members include Gary Regina, David Mills, Darren Burns, and Kevin McQuaid just to name a few.  Sound Bites Grill will be having a 4th of July Party with food, dancing and fun swing music.

Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Aitken family for the children's education. For more information please call 928-282-2713.
