A clue-like comedy about four couples and a suicide rumor will unfold at Mingus Union High School starting Friday as students present Rumors, the second production of the season.

In an effort to bring more students onstage, Mingus theater is presenting two small fall plays this year rather than one large one. Rumors has 10 members of its cast, many of whom have never acted before, said assistant director Jessica Jaramillo.

This is also Jaramillo's first time directing a play, with theater teacher James Ball stepping back to assistant.

"It's intimidating because there's a lot going on," Jaramillo said. "It didn't start really coming together until we started meeting every day, which was after Charlie Brown was over."

The characters in the play deal with some mature dilemmas, rating the play PG.

"(Younger kids) won't really understand why they're trying to cover up a possible suicide," Jaramillo said.

Junior theater student Mariah Jones plays Chris Gorman, the first character onstage in Rumors. Jones' brother was involved in theater until his graduation last year, and she joined herself when she got to MUHS.

"I just did backstage work, and this is the first show I've actually been onstage for, so it's really exciting," she said. "I have a little bit of stage fright."

The two directors have complementary styles, she said.

"Ms. J focused a lot on, 'focus on who your characters are and line comes later,' and Mr. B is kind of the opposite," Jones said.

Jones' friend Matthew Leman plays her husband, Ken, which they joke about.

"The theater department is so welcoming," she said.

Yavapai College student Jasper Lanning plays Lenny Ganz, who is part of the next couple to walk onstage. Lanning's girlfriend of two years plays Ganz's wife Claire.

Lanning earned his GED, and would have been a senior this year. He became involved in theater his sophomore year, and spent most of his time working backstage.

"It's just such a sense of camaraderie," he said of the cast. "It's really nice because we get to see some new faces up there."

Rumors plays for two consecutive weekends starting Nov. 1. Opening night was scheduled early in November to make sure there was time to prepare for the December production, but this means it is now competing with the last football game of the season.

Advanced tickets are $2 less than at the door and can be purchased in the MUHS bookstore, online at http://www.showtix4u.com or by calling 928-649-4466.

Jaramillo said the play has moments of genius.

"The kids rise to the occasion, definitely," Jaramillo said. "If they can pull it together in the timing, this play is going to be hysterical."
