Greg Fishman & Judy Roberts
It's Columbus Day weekend, and vocalist/pianist Judy Roberts and saxophonist Greg Fishman will perform at a 3 p.m. Sunday Oct. 7, concert at Saint Luke's Church in Sedona, in the continuing Sedona Jazz at the Church concert series.
The church is located at 2895 State Route 179, Sedona.
The Roberts and Fishman duo are now back in Arizona after having played last month at the Sunset Jazz at Newport festival and the Monterey Jazz festival.
Judy and Greg are wife and husband, and both have irresistibly fruitful careers throughout the United States as "first call" jazz musicians.
Now a powerhouse in Phoenix and throughout the Southwest, during the years Judy played on the Chicago Jazz scene (with long stints at the London House and Mister Kelly's) she was known as "Chicago's Favorite Jazz Woman."
Our Favorite Jazz Woman has since gone worldwide, thanks to the success of her international recordings and concert performances.
A multiple Grammy nominee, with 20-plus album/CD releases include "The Other World," whose hit single "Señor Blues" was number one on the jazz charts and in radio airplay; the album "Trio," with Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton; the song "Twilight World," co-written with piano diva Marian McPartland (on whose NPR show "Piano Jazz" Judy has guested twice); and her international hit rendition of Dave Frishberg's "My Attorney Bernie."
Judy's approach to jazz, both on the piano and in her vocals, is more than simply a fun-loving approach to music.
Possessing an eclectic and extensive repertoire, she is also a hard-swinging pianist, with an ability to combine lush and sensitive vocals with rapid-fire scat singing -- all of that with an uncanny and unique ability to communicate with her audience in a relaxed and intimate style.
Saxophonist (and husband) Greg Fishman is not only an accomplished jazz musician, but also a clinician, author of innumerable jazz etude books, and a jazz teacher with students throughout the United States.
Greg is also the founder of the Greg Fishman Jazz Studio, which is dedicated to the study of jazz improvisation. His Jazz Studio website features original content discussing various aspects of jazz improvisation, theory, licks, chords and practice tips, together with several etude books which are available for purchase.
His etudes and publications include multiple volumes for jazz saxophone duets, a three-volume series for single saxophone, multiple Jazz phrasing studies, and his newest offering, entitled "Hip Licks For Saxophone."
The concert promises to be a hip way to celebrate this Columbus Day weekend, in a setting is as unique as the music that will be offered.
Sedona Jazz at the Church has sponsored jazz concerts since 2009 at Saint Luke's Church.
The church doors will open at 2:30 p.m., with tickets available at the door. General admission $10, and reserved seating available for $15.
Tickets may also be purchased on Saturday morning, Oct. 6, at the church.
