Susannah Martin

Jazz, Latin and contemporary vocalist Susannah Martin presents her five-piece band "Beleza" at Sound Bites Grill on Saturday, July 7, 7-10 p.m. for a romantic evening of latin grooves.

"Beleza", which means 'beauty' in Portuguese, plays breezy brazilian bossa novas and sambas, as well as boleros and other latin styles, sung in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Making up the rest of the band are recording artist/guitarist/vocalist, Patrick Ki, Prescott-based jazz pianist, Matt Jackson, the dynamic (and part-Brazilian) drummer/percussionist/vocalist, Porangui McGrew and multi-talented bassist, Steve Douglas.

Martin is known regionally for her masterful vocal stylings in jazz, brazilian and pop genres.

"My love affair with brazilian jazz started 15 years ago, when I first heard it sung in its original language", she explains. Hailing from the West Coast where her 20+year career was launched, Susannah Martin has sung in numerous bands in Arizona, California, Oregon, Kentucky and on cruise ships. Based in Sedona for the past seven years, Susannah performs regularly with several bands at concerts, clubs and private events. She is described as "...the consummate performer, as talented as she is beautiful ... a true delight to behold," from the Tucson Jazz Society.

Patrick Ki is a formally trained classical and jazz guitarist with two guitar degrees and an extensive history of live playing, composing and teaching. His love of brazilian guitar styles shines through in his fine rhythm and harmony. He's known nationally as a recording artist with a lyrical-based sound influenced by his Hawaiian island upbringing.

Matt Jackson's love and study of jazz and latin piano shows in his rhythmic, harmonic style. Besides his exceptional piano playing, Matt Jackson is an accomplished composer and arranger. Jackson has been based musically in many different places including including Boulder, Colorado, the San Francisco Bay area, Amsterdam and currently, Northern Arizona. His big-band charts and dance scores have been heard on three continents. He currently performs AZ jazz venues and regional jazz festivals and runs his own recording studio.

Reared among the three cultures of Brazil, Mexico and the U.S., percussionist, Porangui McGrew was steeped in various traditional forms of music, healing and ceremony since birth. Drawing from his cross-cultural background and ethnomusicology training at Duke University, Porangui has over twelve years of international work experience as an artist, educator, filmmaker, consultant and therapist. He's widely known and loved in the region for his expertise at Brazilian drumming, percussion and song as well as his positive, energetic delivery. "I'm always thrilled to have a chance to do Brazilian music with Porangui. He's such a gifted musician with an uplifting presence", remarks vocalist, Susannah Martin.

Steve Douglas' 40+ years of bass playing in countless genres of music have made him a much-sought after player. He studied at the University of Michigan and Michigan State and has performed primarily at entertainment hotspots in MI, IN, AZ and HI, playing with orchestras, jazz combos and of pop bands of all genres. Two of his other current bands include gypsy jazz group "Zazu" and classical-pop strings band "Pop Goes Vivaldi". Steve is a busy member of the Arizona music scene, as he is also owner of entertainment agency, "Artists in Rhythm" and president of Phoenix jazz society, JazzinAZ.

Sound Bites Grill is located in the Hyatt Pinon Pointe shopping center in uptown Sedona, off of Hwy 89A. This new and exciting venue is open for dining and features live music Thursday through Sunday.
