Soundscape Sedona, featuring some of Arizona's grooviest straight ahead jazz musicians, will make a rare appearance together for St. Luke's "Sedona Jazz at the Church" series on Sunday, April 15 at 3 p.m.

The group, made up of Susannah Martin on vocals, Steve Sandner on piano and vocals, and Steve Douglas on acoustic bass, will perform ballad and swing selections from the Great American Songbook, as well as Brazilian jazz and Bebop favorites. The popular monthly "Sedona Jazz at the Church"series features regional jazz artists in a chapel venue, known not only for its warm ambiance and rich acoustics, but also for the high tech video internet streaming of their Sedona jazz concerts as well as Sunday masses. Heading the church, Bishop David McMannes, a jazz lover and fine musician himself, likes to suggest that"on the eighth day, God Created Jazz" and will often play his horn along with the musicians as evidence of his testimony.

The jazz combo, "Soundscape Sedona" formed in 2006 was a happy introduction of highly trained jazz musicians that had recently moved into the area. In the following years, the group thrilled audiences throughout Arizona at concerts and jazz festivals with its energetic, melodic and highly accessible jazz. Although members have since moved in various directions, performing regularly with other combos and enjoying many roles as AZ musicians, the core players treasure every opportunity to play together.

Martin attests, "I feel like I'm going home when I play with these guys. They welcomed me into the scene with open arms when I arrived six years ago and it's always been a blast to perform with them. There is a warm synergy between us that comes through in the groove we create and the beauty of tone and musicality we share together."

Sandner hails from the Chicago area, where he's been performing since the mid-60's at top jazz venues. His musical jazz style has elements of big band, blues and swing, and is easy to listen to for jazz aficionados, or even for those who aren't particularly jazz fans.

Douglas' 40+ years of bass playing in countless genres of music have made him a much sought-after player, although his great passion for jazz is evident in his masterful playing and dedication to the art.

Martin has a fluid, sultry voice is colored with jazz and R&B, along with a spicy international flair ignited by her multi-lingual singing in Latin styles.
