CAMP VERDE - Over the last 50-plus years, Fort Verde Days has seen many events come and go.

Can-can girls, beard contests, horseshoe tournaments and deep-pit barbecue are on the list. Rarely, though, does anyone try to revive one once it has run its course.

But this year there will be an exception. For several years Fort Verde Days included a quilt show. No one seems to remember exactly when it began or when it ceased, but those who did participate remember a couple of things.

First, it was held at the Methodist Church. And second, it died because it got too big. Over-popularity is seldom a good reason for terminating anything, but in the case of the quilt show, it appears the church was just too small.

It's a notion that did not sit well with Jeannette Teets, a new member of Camp Verde Promotions, the volunteer organization that brings you Fort Verde Days every year.

"They were asking for suggestions, and I'm a quilter. I always wondered why they didn't have a quilt show in Camp Verde. It is an old-fashioned kind of town, and it seemed a good fit," says Teets.

Not one to make a suggestion then walk away, Teets is now organizing a revival of the Fort Verde Days quilt show and she is seeking any help she can get.

"I asked and it seems the gymnasium is available. I figure that should give us plenty of room. Now I just need some help from the community," she says.

Teets says she would like to see all kinds of quilts displayed at the show, from family heirlooms to modern interpretations, and open it to anyone in the Verde Valley.

"I spoke with a quilt appraiser and she said there are a lot of valuable antique and unusual quilts in the Verde Valley and in particular the Camp Verde area. I'd also like to see her have a talk on quilt appraisal," she says.

The quilt show is planned for Oct. 12-14. Anyone interested in helping organize or displaying quilts is asked to call Teets at (928) 567-6891.
