NORAZ: Literary Arts for Rural Arizona is continuing the celebration of its sixth season of literature and creativity with a special Saturday Poets Corner, in the Sedona Arts Center's sculpture garden, on June 2 from 4-5 p.m. featuring the renowned poet, writer and winner of the 2009 American Book Award, as well as a Pulitzer Prize nominee, Stella Pope Duarte.
"Sedona residents deserve to experience authors such as Duarte." says NORAZ founder, Christopher Ya'ir Lane. "We strive to bring local writers and poets together to network, and also expose them to different facets of the literary arts through guest speakers and workshops."
Duarte is a critically acclaimed author, human rights advocate and college professor. Critics have described her as one of the writers who will enlarge humanity.
Her works include: Fragile Night, Let Their Spirits Dance, If I Die in Juárez and Women Who Live in Coffee Shops and Other Stories, a collection of stories which won first place in the 2008 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize Competition. Duarte has received many national awards including a 2009 American Book Award, a Pulitzer Prize nomination, the Southwest Book of the Year Award, and the Arizona Book of the Year Award for "Best in Popular Fiction."
Duarte will offer a workshop preceding the Poets Corner, from 2:30-3:30 p.m., highlighting the importance and meaning of "Writing on Purpose". The workshop is free and open to the public, and suggested donations of $10 are greatly appreciated.
Then from 4-5 p.m., Duarte will share various readings of her poetry, prose and short stories.
This month's Poets Corner will offer a rare opportunity to experience Duarte's unique and intricate work first-hand.
Lane says he is looking forward to sharing Duarte's incomparable talent with the Sedona community, and hosting more guest speakers like Duarte at future Poets Corner gatherings.
The Poets Corner takes place once a month on the first Saturday of month from 4-5 p.m. at the Sedona Arts Center located at 15 Art Barn Road in Uptown Sedona. Gatherings take place in the outside sculpture garden, weather permitting. Should inclement weather arise, the Poets Corner will meet in the south classroom of SAC.
